Celebrating America’s Independence
On the 4th of July, hundreds of racers lined up at the intersection of Harrison and Fifth Streets in downtown Leadville for the 2016 Firecracker 5K. The morning weather was cool, and the skies were blue and beautiful. This event is popular with locals as it supports the Leadville-Lake County Sports Hall of Fame. Members of Skyline Baseball managed registration and the Leadville Police Department lead the pack through the course.
Coach Darren took off for a very strong start, leading the frontrunners off the line on the slight downslope of 5th Street. The course wove through the city streets on the west side of Leadville. Around the 3K mark, runners gained some tough elevation on the freshly-paved Mountain View Drive. Finally, the course turned southbound onto Harrison Avenue to complete the loop. Spectators lining the street for the upcoming 4th of July parade whooped and cheered for each runner as they approached the finish line.
Two hundred and nine athletes finished the race. Coach Darren sprinted to a 4th Place finish in 20:04, only two seconds off of the podium. Club Secretary Katie finished in 54th Place after 27:58. Most importantly, a high percentage of finishers listed Leadville as their home, making the Firecracker 5K an extra special community event to kick off the Summer of 2016!
Happy 4th of July!
